Larger than the total land area of the world, it has a past, present and future so rich that investigation of those areas could be endless. The Pacific is where we live and its peoples are our neighbours. We have close relationships with them. The resource-based format of this book aims to provide opportunities for students to: gain new knowledge and skills, especially in literacy; seek, use and create knowledge; become informed decision-makers; practise all the processes of social enquiry (asking questions, gathering information, exploring values, and developing understandings about social issues); develop key competencies such as managing self, relating to others, taking part and contributing, thinking, and using language, symbols and texts. All strands are covered - culture and how it functions; the relationships between people, places and environments; how past events, experiences and actions help us understand the past and present and help us imagine possible futures; the ways people take part in economic activities.
